Mount Vernon Trail Builders Get Back to Work

Volunteers (led by Jerry Granahan) are shown placing a log barrier along the side of a newly completed trail, called Rooty.  Why a log barrier?  To help stop short-cutting on the trails at Little Mountain Park.

At this September 10th volunteer trail building session we had the best "return from summer break" turnout ever - with 20 volunteers!  This gave us enough volunteers to break into two groups; one working on log barriers (on Rooty), the other working on the Heart of the Park (HOP) flow trail.  The flow trail represents the next phase of work on the HOP Bicycle Skills Park.

A number of years ago we started taking the month of August off.  Family vacations and hot weather led us to start do this.  The downside was that when we restarted in September we found it took awhile to rebuild our volunteer numbers.  Thank goodness, not this year!

We believe that people knowing about the building of the Heart of the Park Public Trails Facility is helping us to grow our volunteer involvement.  That said, we're planning ahead for what we hope will be our best year ever in volunteer hours.  As volunteer numbers grow our need for skilled leaders increases.  We encourage young people in need of senior class projects, or anyone in need of volunteer activities to join us.

We’re now reaching out to individuals and/or groups ready to get involved.  Volunteers are asked to arrive at the beginning of the session (if possible), to attend the safety orientation.  Those attending are welcome to leave early if necessary. Tools, lunch, snacks, training and supervision are all provided. Our sessions are family friendly, and a lot of fun...
